World Bank mission assesses progress and prepares Additional Financing for the Renewable Energy and Improved Energy Efficiency in Public Services Project

This morning, February 17, a team of consultants from the World Bank met with Cape Verde’s Minister of Industry, Trade and Energy, Alexandre Monteiro, as part of the Mission to Support the Implementation of the Renewable Energy and Improvement of Energy Efficiency in Public Services Project. The mission, which runs until February 21, aims to discuss the progress of the project and the structuring of additional funding.

On the occasion, Minister Alexandre Monteiro stressed that the process of reforming the electricity sector is advanced and that the government is working to increase the participation and involvement of the private sector. The legislation needed for this reform is expected to be completed soon. He also emphasized that the studies carried out are fundamental for setting tariffs, an essential point in this process.

For her part, the World Bank’s resident representative, Indira Campos, pointed out that the actions underway are in line with the project’s objectives, but stressed the need to reinforce the alignment of expectations and define the main aspects for obtaining additional funding. The mission also has the support of the UGPE, which has played an essential role in institutional coordination and in improving the project’s performance, he stressed.

Representing the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE) were the Coordinator, Nuno Gomes, and the project’s Electromechanical Engineer, Izauda Canto.
It should be noted that the aim of this mission is to support the implementation of the Renewable Energy and Improvement of Energy Efficiency in Public Services Project, to prepare for the REIUP Additional Financing and, in parallel, to develop a pipeline of renewable energy projects, within the scope of the technical assistance program financed by ESMAP, to boost the energy transition in Cape Verde.

The mission will continue with technical visits and meetings with key players in the sector, with the aim of consolidating strategies for Cape Verde’s energy transition.
