Maio boosts renewable energy production with new Solar Photovoltaic Center

The Maio Island Photovoltaic Solar Center was inaugurated on March 7 by Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva. The Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE) was represented by its Coordinator, Nuno Gomes, the Manager of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Public Services Project (REIUP), Daniel Santos, and the Project’s Electromechanical Engineer, Izauda do Canto.

During the ceremony, Electromechanical Engineer Izauda do Canto gave a technical presentation on the project, highlighting the main features of the infrastructure and its contribution to increasing solar energy production capacity on the island of Maio.

The Maio Solar Photovoltaic Center is part of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Improvement in Public Services Project, which aims to increase renewable energy production and improve the performance of the electricity sector in Cape Verde, while also leveraging private financing. The project is financed by the World Bank and managed by UGPE.

The center is already in production and is expected to be complemented in September with the installation of a battery system for energy storage. The solution will optimize solar production, prevent losses when there is no sunlight, and ensure greater stability for the electrical system.

With this investment, the government expects to achieve more than 40% renewable energy on the island of Maio later this year, exceeding the national target of around 35% set for 2026.
