As part of the World Bank’s technical mission for the Harmonization and Improvement of Statistics in West Africa (HISWA) Project, a working meeting dedicated to the Land Registry component on the island of Santiago was held on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 29.

The session brought together representatives from the World Bank, the National Institute of Land Management (INGT), the National Institute of Statistics (INE), and the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE), with the aim of taking stock of this component and analyzing options for its implementation during the project’s final phase.

During the meeting, the results achieved from the land registry conducted in São Vicente were presented, and the status of this component’s implementation on the island of Santiago was assessed following the termination of the contract with the Terra Vital consortium. The INGT also presented the planned strategy for continuing the work in two municipalities on the island.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to analyze the feasibility of completing this component by December 2026, as well as the scenarios associated with a possible extension of the Project until December 2027. The teams discussed various alternatives for the Land Registry on the island of Santiago, including continuing the activity, redefining its scope, or rescheduling it, depending on the project’s priorities and implementation capacity.

The Real Estate Registry is an important tool for land use planning and management, strengthening legal certainty regarding property rights and contributing to the production of reliable geospatial information, which is essential for land use planning and the formulation of evidence-based public policies.
