Contract signed for the redevelopment of the São Sebastião neighborhood in Cidade Velha
21 julho, 2025As part of the Resilient Tourism and Development of the Blue Economy Project, a contract was signed on Friday, July 18, for the Redevelopment of the São Sebastião Quarter, in the Old Town, a World Heritage Site, more specifically the section linking the Cathedral to the Misericórdia complex on the historic site.
The agreement was signed by the Coordinator of the Special Projects Management Unit (UGPE), Nuno Gomes, and Arnaldino Furtado, representing the contractor MF Group- Construções E Serviços, Lda.
The work will be carried out in 8 months, from the date of consignment. The work will be overseen by a firm hired for this purpose, and a multidisciplinary team from CMRS and IPC will be responsible for monitoring the proper execution of both the construction and inspection contracts.
This is the first of eight projects to be implemented at the historic site, as part of the Urban and Environmental Requalification Program, which is funded by a loan from the Cape Verdean government to the World Bank, and by financial resources from the Tourism Social Sustainability Fund/FSST. The intervention focuses on an area of great historical and cultural value, and aims to preserve and enhance the heritage, improve the urban infrastructure and boost the economic and tourist development of the Old Town.
With this investment, the government is reaffirming its commitment to revitalizing the country’s historic areas, promoting sustainable cultural tourism and involving and benefiting local communities.
